Everything you need before launch

Safety rules, training, and what to expect — read anytime, book when ready.

Get captain-ready

Florida operators born on or after January 1, 1988 are required to complete boating safety education before renting a motorized vessel. Finish our $13.95 online course, pass the exam, and show up ready to helm with confidence.

  • Boating safety education — born on or after January 1, 1988? Florida law requires an approved course; carry your card or qualifying temporary certificate when you are the operator

  • Life jackets — a properly sized U.S. Coast Guard–approved PFD is required for every person on board, with stricter rules for children

  • Boating under the influence — the designated operator must be sober; Florida BUI laws apply and passengers may not operate while impaired

  • Navigation rules — obey posted speed limits, idle-speed and no-wake zones, channel markers, and manatee protection areas

  • Capacity and responsibility — do not exceed the vessel’s lawful capacity; the operator is responsible for passenger safety and required safety gear on board

What to expect

  1. Orientation

Walk the vessel with your operator — helm, safety gear, and local no-wake zones.

  2. Departure

Idle out of the marina, then cruise at safe speed for conditions and traffic.

  3. Return

Allow time to refuel if required and dock slowly — crew may assist tying off.

Safety requirements

You are responsible for everyone on board. Treat the pontoon like any motorized vessel under Florida law.

  • Renters typically must be 21+ with valid ID; designated operator must meet Florida operator age rules
  • Adequate U.S. Coast Guard–approved PFDs for every passenger — children need properly sized vests
  • Born on or after Jan 1, 1988? Florida requires boating safety education — carry proof or complete our temporary certificate course
  • No boating under the influence — designate a sober operator
  • Obey manatee zones, idle speed areas, and posted speed limits
  • Brief all guests on emergency procedures and where fire extinguisher / VHF are located
  • Check weather and lightning policy before departure

Good to know

  • Bring coolers in soft bags; avoid glass where operator policy restricts it

  • Bluetooth speakers are common — keep volume respectful near homes and wildlife

  • Maximum capacity is set by the manufacturer — do not exceed posted limits
