Safety guide

Your safety is our priority

Every outing should feel exciting and secure. This guide covers boat rental safety on Sarasota Bay, Florida boating rules, waivers, and how temporary boater education works when the law requires it.

We built this page because your wellbeing matters as much as the adventure.

Briefing before every launch

You get a hands-on safety walkthrough at the dock β€” never skip it, even if you have boated before.

Education when you need it

Florida may require a boater safety course before you operate. We walk you through it at booking when it applies.

Fleet maintained for the bay

Life jackets, capacity limits, and a dockside check are part of every rental from our Tamiami Trail base.

Real people behind the booking

Questions about safety, waivers, or your trip? Call us β€” we are happy to help before you leave the dock.

Step 1

Florida temporary boater education

If you were born on or after January 1, 1988 and do not hold a Florida Boating Safety Education ID card, Florida law may require you to complete an approved boating safety course before operating a vessel. When your booking needs it, we collect the course fee at checkout and guide each operator through the steps before launch.

Always confirm current FWC and Florida Statute requirements. Operators remain responsible for carrying valid proof on the water. This page is general guidance, not legal advice.

Step 2

Know before you go

Treat every rental like operating a motor vehicle on the water β€” stay alert, respect other boaters, and follow your dockside briefing and local rules on Sarasota Bay.

Boat & pontoon safety

Wear a U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket (PFD) when required β€” and for children, always.

Do not exceed the vessel capacity plate (passengers or weight).

Know where the fire extinguisher, throwable flotation, and whistle are before leaving the dock.

Obey posted speed zones, idle-speed/no-wake areas, and channel markers.

Do not operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs (BUI laws apply in Florida).

Watch for swimmers, kayakers, sandbars, and manatee zones.

Check weather and water conditions before launch; return early if conditions worsen.

Keep a sharp lookout β€” pontoons and deck boats handle differently than cars.

Children must meet age and supervision requirements β€” ask us before booking if unsure.

Complete the full safety briefing every time β€” even experienced boaters.

Step 3

Before launch

Paperwork, packing, and your dockside briefing β€” in order.

Waivers & rental agreements

Before you launch, you will review and sign a liability waiver and rental agreement. Each operating adult typically signs their own waiver.

  • You may receive a digital waiver before check-in β€” read it completely before signing.
  • Waivers typically cover assumption of risk, release of liability, and acknowledgment of safety rules.
  • Minors often require a parent or legal guardian signature.
  • Your booking confirmation may link to safety and cancellation policies for your outing.
  • Questions about a waiver? Call us before your reservation date.

Before you launch checklist

  1. Confirm you meet age and boater-education requirements for Florida and your outing.
  2. Complete any required online course or temporary permit steps before arrival when applicable.
  3. Bring a valid photo ID and booking confirmation.
  4. Wear swimwear and secure eyewear; apply sunscreen; bring water.
  5. Allow time for the on-site safety briefing β€” do not skip it.
  6. Review weather; postpone if conditions are unsafe.

Next Level Boat Club runs rentals from our Sarasota base. We are responsible for the vessel briefing, insurance context we provide at booking, and on-water safety guidance for our fleet outings.
